An unusual set of circumstances leads to this error type. In its simplest form, a brockage is an incuse, mirror-image version of the design, produced when a coin is struck into a planchet. The considerably rarer counterbrockage is a raised, normally oriented version of the design, produced when a coin or more likely a die capped coin bearing a brockage is driven into a planchet. The counterbrockage elements on this example include much of Lincoln’s bust, the numbers “197”, and the letters ERTY”.
